49ers Coach Kyle Shanahan Attends Training Camp After Car Accident

49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan appeared at the team’s training camp. This follows reports of his car accident earlier this month where he sustained multiple injuries.

Shanahan was seen on the field alongside general manager John Lynch during team practice. According to The Athletic’s Matt Barrows, Shanahan wore sunglasses and had a soft cast on his left hand. Swelling in his face had seemingly reduced since the accident.

Team members, including Kyle Juszczyk, Fred Warner, and Dre Greenlaw, greeted Shanahan during his brief appearance lasting just over 30 minutes at the camp.

A report from the 49ers on Saturday confirmed Shanahan suffered ‘non-life-threatening injuries’ in the crash. These injuries have limited his role in training camp.

Shanahan’s injuries are reportedly extensive: a broken nose, three broken ribs, and a broken hand, with over 40 stitches needed for facial injuries. He also endured a severe concussion during the July 14 accident near his home in northern California.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter and Nick Wagoner, 49ers assistant head coach Chris Foerster is assuming some of Shanahan’s responsibilities during his recovery. Lynch mentioned that the coaching staff would collaboratively manage the team’s needs in Shanahan’s absence.

Last season, Shanahan led the 49ers to a 12-5 record and an NFL Playoff appearance. They beat the Philadelphia Eagles at home but were overwhelmed by the Seattle Seahawks, who went on to win the Super Bowl.

For the upcoming season, the 49ers are considered one of the top contenders for the 2027 Super Bowl. Their recent acquisition of Pro Bowl wide receiver Mike Evans adds strength to their lineup, supporting fourth-year quarterback Brock Purdy.

The 49ers begin their preseason schedule with a home game against the Tennessee Titans on Aug. 13. It remains unclear if Foerster will serve as acting head coach for the game, as Shanahan must complete concussion protocols before resuming full duties.

Shanahan is anticipated to coach at the 49ers’ first regular-season game on Sept. 10 against the Los Angeles Rams in Melbourne, Australia.
