The Cleveland Browns surprised many in the NFL by trading Myles Garrett, the reigning Defensive Player of the Year, to the Los Angeles Rams. Garrett had established himself as the league’s single-season sack record holder, making this trade significant.
The Rams, already a formidable team, acquired Garrett for a substantial package. In exchange, they sent the Browns the 2024 Defensive Rookie of the Year Jared Verse, a 2027 first-round pick, a 2028 second-round pick, and a 2029 third-round pick. Cleveland Browns General Manager Andrew Berry expressed that the opportunity was too beneficial to ignore, although the team initially intended for Garrett to remain with them for his entire career.
Garrett joined the Browns in 2016 and became a pivotal player. He consistently recorded double-digit sacks over the past eight seasons, including more than 14 in five consecutive seasons. His contributions were recognized with another Defensive Player of the Year award last season after achieving 23 sacks.
The Rams plan to build on their momentum, having extended quarterback Matthew Stafford’s contract. They aim to strengthen their roster further, adding Alabama quarterback Ty Simpson with the 13th pick in the NFL draft.
Cleveland, on the other hand, looks forward to the future, armed with multiple first-round picks in the upcoming drafts. They selected tackle Spencer Fano and wide receiver K.C. Concepcion in the recent draft, showing their commitment to team development.
Jared Verse, the new addition to the Browns, has already made a name for himself by earning Pro Bowl selections in consecutive seasons. He recorded 12 sacks and 22 tackles for loss as an outside linebacker, proving himself to be a valuable asset.
