Co-hosts of “The View” had a heated debate on-air about whether Democrats should support Maine Senate candidate Graham Platner, despite his involvement in numerous controversies.
Sunny Hostin shared her change of mind regarding Platner’s candidacy. “Yesterday, I was sort of on the fence,” Hostin recalled. She expressed concern about the character and morals of candidates, questioning if Platner was the right choice to challenge Susan Collins. Hostin concluded that Democrats need to gain control of the Senate and the House to restore normal governance. “If I lived in Maine, I would hold my nose and vote for him,” she stated.
Sara Haines strongly disagreed with Hostin. She emphasized the importance of character and integrity in political candidates. Haines pointed out that sending someone with antisemitic, racist, or sexist views to Washington, D.C., would contradict their criticism of figures like Donald Trump. “We can’t plug our nose and send someone there that’s problematic,” she emphasized.
Alyssa Farah Griffin voiced discomfort with extreme political views, expressing a sentiment of being surrounded by extremists. The co-host suggested there was still time for the Democratic Party to find a better candidate than Platner. Haines agreed with Griffin about the dangers of political extremism.
“His marriage is the least of my problems,” Haines added, noting that it is Platner’s other issues that she finds problematic.
Platner faces significant scandals, including alleged inappropriate communications and a controversial tattoo resembling Nazi insignia. Whoopi Goldberg expressed dismay over the state of politics but also highlighted the need for better candidates.
Goldberg acknowledged the baggage surrounding current political figures and encouraged a higher standard for candidates. When Platner claimed ignorance of his tattoo’s Nazi associations, Haines expressed skepticism. Despite the controversies, Goldberg remained focused on the need for better leadership across the board.
Some Democrats have shown support for Platner, while others are critical of his candidacy due to his past controversies. The divided opinions on “The View” mirror the broader debate among Democrats over supporting Platner in his Senate race.
