FIFA World Cup signage can be seen at the PATH train station at the World Trade Center transportation hub in New York, dated May 27, 2026. The 2026 FIFA World Cup is scheduled from June 11 to July 19.
As crowds gather in New York City and New Jersey for FIFA World Cup matches, visitors will encounter upgraded transportation systems with numerous improvements. There is also a chance these matches may coincide with the NBA championship series between the New York Knicks and San Antonio Spurs.
“It’s not just the Knicks, it’s the Knicks-plus, what a year,” stated New York Governor Kathy Hochul at a press conference, urging tourists to visit despite the busy schedule of events. “We can handle this; this is what we do best.” The Knicks are set to host the Spurs at Madison Square Garden on June 8 and 10, with a potential game on June 16 if required.
The first of eight matches at the New York New Jersey Stadium in East Rutherford, NJ, will occur on June 13, with Brazil facing Morocco. On Thursday, Hochul and New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani outlined various strategies, many executed by the Metropolitan Transit Authority, intended to manage up to 100,000 additional mass transit riders on game days.
“We [normally] accommodate 6 million riders a day, so this falls within our capabilities,” Hochul expressed. Adjustments for game and match days involve expanded bus and subway routes, along with lane closures designed to create travel corridors for improved bus and emergency vehicle movement. There will also be bans on construction and deliveries in certain city areas to aid traffic flow.
“We are adept at organizing large events,” Mamdani said, though he admitted increased road congestion during games is inevitable. “I encourage New Yorkers heading to Midtown to leave their cars at home. Opt for biking, subway rides, or walking.”
Authorities claim readiness for an NBA Finals game in Manhattan on June 16, coinciding with the World Cup match between France and Senegal at the New Jersey stadium. “This moment is one we’ve prepared for, hoped for, and feel fully equipped for,” Mamdani noted.
State and local officials also shared details on security plans aimed at minimizing threats of crime and terrorism. “You will see increased police presence, but be assured our cyber team is diligently focused,” Hochul mentioned, noting subway crime rates in NYC have hit a 16-year low. “We are ready for everything from extreme temperatures to flash floods and increased traffic,” Mamdani added.
The World Cup final will take place at the New York New Jersey Stadium on July 19.
