U.S. House Approves Ukraine Aid Amid Republican Division

3 weeks ago 0

The U.S. House of Representatives approved a significant aid package for Ukraine in a 226-195 vote on Thursday. This decision underscores a divide within GOP ranks concerning the country’s strategy towards the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

The approved legislation allocates over $1 billion for security and reconstruction efforts in Ukraine. It also grants the authority for additional defense loans and imposes new sanctions on Russia, as reported by the Associated Press.

This legislative action was supported by nearly all Democrats, along with 18 Republicans who chose to depart from their party’s predominant stance. These Republican Congress members who backed the bill include:

  • Don Bacon of Nebraska
  • Brian Fitzpatrick of Pennsylvania
  • Andrew Garbarino of New York
  • Carlos Gimenez of Florida
  • Rob Bresnahan of Pennsylvania
  • Nick LaLota of New York
  • Mike Lawler of New York
  • Michael McCaul of Texas
  • Mike Carey of Ohio
  • Jeff Hurd of Colorado
  • David Joyce of Ohio
  • Jen Kiggans of Virginia
  • Max Miller of Ohio
  • Greg Murphy of North Carolina
  • Dan Newhouse of Washington
  • Glenn Thompson of Pennsylvania
  • Mike Turner of Ohio
  • Joe Wilson of South Carolina

The strong Democratic support combined with these Republican votes helped the bill pass despite robust opposition from other House Republicans. This underscores existing tensions within the GOP, particularly about foreign aid, as many Republicans favor a more isolationist policy.

Following the House’s approval, the bill now moves to the Senate. Its prospects there depend on complex partisan negotiations and potential presidential input.

Notably, this vote marks a second recent divergence of Republicans from party leadership. The House had previously passed a resolution concerning Iran War Powers.
