The Democratic Party establishment secured a significant victory on Saturday as Rep. Ed Case defeated progressive challenger Sen. Jarrett Keohokalole in the primary election. Case, representing Hawaii, managed to retain his seat despite facing a strong challenge within his own party.
Ed Case has a long history in Congress, serving from 2002 to 2007 and returning in 2018. This primary posed one of the toughest battles he has faced, encapsulating a broader conflict between established Democrats and newer socialist factions. Multiple incumbent Democrats in the House have lost to progressive challengers.
“Socialist victories show Dems’ descent down ‘deadly path of communism,’ Johnson warns,” Fox News reported.
Keohokalole, who has been part of Hawaii’s state legislature since 2014, emerged as the most significant challenger this year. Both candidates raised substantial funds during the campaign, but Case held a financial advantage from the start.
Keohokalole criticized Case for not sufficiently opposing the Trump administration’s policies, particularly around federal immigration matters. The progressive candidate also faulted Case for supporting an early version of the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act, which aimed to introduce federal voter ID and citizenship requirements.
“This has nothing to do with voter suppression,” Case said, addressing accusations against him. “There is no security problem in our election system,” Keohokalole rebutted in response.
Case eventually opposed a revised version of the SAVE America Act, aligning with most House Democrats. He will now face Republican Adriel Lam in the upcoming November election.
Hawaii’s 1st Congressional District, including areas of Oahu and Honolulu, remains a secure Democratic stronghold with a Cook Political Report designation of D+13.
