Controversies Surrounding Maine Senate Candidate Graham Platner

3 weeks ago 0

Maine Democratic Senate candidate Graham Platner faces numerous allegations from former girlfriends, detailed in a report outlining accusations of rape fantasies, heavy drinking, and violent behavior. Platner also garners criticism for a chest tattoo called the Totenkopf, alleged sexting with younger women, and making light of a Taliban attack that nearly harmed a former Pennsylvania gubernatorial candidate.

Allegations from Ex-Girlfriend

One ex-girlfriend, Lyndsey Fifield, described her experiences in a report to the New York Times. She met Platner in 2013 when he was a George Washington University student. Fifield shared that Platner made jokes about his Totenkopf tattoo, which he claimed symbolized his military unit’s parallels to the Schutzstaffel as a “death unit… killers.” This statement contradicts Platner’s previous claims of being unaware of the tattoo’s Nazi association.

Fifield also recounted unsettling behavior, such as Platner sharpening an ax while watching TV and discussing how he would rape home invaders. She described an incident where Platner pulled her out of a taxi during an altercation. Another event involved Platner reportedly pushing her into a bedroom and holding the door shut, though she eventually left.

Other Reported Incidents

Fifield stated Platner fantasized about harming perceived threats, and had both an ax from his past work on the Appalachian Trail and an AR-15 in his home. The firearm is currently banned in the District of Columbia, though the law faces legal challenges.

Response to Allegations

Platner acknowledges dealing with undiagnosed Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) from his military service, leading to excessive alcohol use and relationship issues. He takes responsibility for past actions and emphasizes his personal growth and campaign efforts in Maine.

Jenny Racicot, another Maine Democrat who dated Platner, expressed concerns over his controversial Reddit posts and issues with women. An unnamed former partner described her role in the relationship as “collateral damage.”

Political Reactions

The Republican National Committee remarks that Platner’s controversies are part of a pattern, questioning the Democrats’ willingness to overlook his actions. Delanie Bomar, a spokeswoman, calls for Maine voters to consider Platner’s past behavior.

Fox News Digital sought comments from various political figures, including Collins, Gov. Janet Mills, and Senate campaign committees. The response from Democrat allies and opponents remains critical.

Graham Platner’s campaign focuses on progressive economic policies, advocating higher taxes on billionaires and relief for working-class citizens.
