The season of commencement addresses has posed challenges for many speakers.
Social media is awash with videos showing prominent figures trying to inspire new graduates, only to focus on artificial intelligence. These speeches come at a time when graduates face uncertain job prospects and substantial student debt.
Many companies cite AI as a reason for slowing entry-level hiring and laying off staff. Some tech leaders even hint, or boast, about the job-reducing potential of their innovations.
Real estate executive Gloria Caulfield and Big Machine’s CEO Scott Borchetta both emphasized AI in their speeches. Caulfield described it as the next industrial revolution at a University of Central Florida event, while Borchetta spoke of AI’s impact on production at Middle Tennessee State University. Students responded to their optimism with loud boos.
At the University of Arizona, former Google CEO Eric Schmidt faced intense reactions. His remarks about an AI-dominated future were interrupted by voices expressing concern about technological and social issues.
“You fear a future where you didn’t cause the problems,” Schmidt noted, urging graduates to engage with AI’s development rather than fear it.
Yet, Schmidt’s advice to adapt seemed out of touch for a generation labeled as coddled while encountering limited upward mobility opportunities. The certainty of a stable job, home, and family life is no longer a given.
The awareness of AI’s impact is deepened by statements from affluent figures like venture capitalist Marc Andreessen. In his discussion with Joe Rogan, Andreessen highlighted the supposed advantages of bots over human workers.
Graduates are rightfully angry, as many perceive their future as being sacrificed for technological advancements. Institutions once promising secure careers now seem less valuable amidst an alleged crisis in entry-level employment. Encounters with wealthy figures praising AI only fuel this frustration.
