Democratic Concerns Intensify Over Maine Senate Candidate Platner

3 weeks ago 0

Democratic politicians, officials, and strategists are increasingly concerned about Graham Platner, the leading Senate candidate in Maine, following new reports about his personal history. These worries focus on his vulnerabilities in the upcoming general election.

The New York Times published a report revealing that several women who previously dated Platner accused him of behaving in unsettling and intimidating ways. One woman reported instances where he physically grabbed or yanked her. She also noted that during their relationship, Platner had a chest tattoo resembling a Nazi symbol. However, other ex-partners expressed feeling safe with Platner. These revelations add to earlier controversies over the tattoo, as well as sexually explicit messages he sent while married and offensive online comments.

The intensified scrutiny of Platner, a progressive political newcomer and oyster farmer, has fueled anxiety within the Democratic party. This seat, against Republican Senator Susan Collins, is considered crucial. Party members fear that more damaging reports about Platner may surface.

Senator Maggie Hassan of New Hampshire emphasized the seriousness of the new reports, telling Punchbowl News they require close attention. Other Democratic senators either avoided commenting or sought to minimize the concerns.

Platner, expected to win the Democratic primary in Maine on Tuesday, stated Thursday night that he would not withdraw from the race. Speaking on MS NOW, he admitted to poor behavior following his military service but denied harming his ex-girlfriend. Platner claimed he only recently learned of the Nazi resemblance in his tattoo, which he has since covered.
