The NBA Finals have begun with a thrilling start as Jalen Brunson led the New York Knicks to victory in Game 1 against the San Antonio Spurs. Despite struggles from San Antonio’s Victor Wembanyama, he still managed impressive numbers in his finals debut.
Game 2 is set for Friday night in San Antonio. The Spurs aim to even the series before heading to New York, while the Knicks hope to replicate their success as the first team since Houston in 1995 to win the first two games of the finals on the road. The game will tip off at 8:42 p.m. EDT and broadcasted on ABC, with San Antonio seen as 6.5-point favorites.
Brunson scored 30 points in Game 1, where the Knicks overturned a 14-point deficit in the third quarter and finished with an 11-0 run. While Brunson earned much praise, the contribution of Josh Hart was noted. Despite scoring only three points, Hart made a significant impact with 15 rebounds, six assists, and four steals. Such a performance in finals history has not been seen since Larry Bird achieved the same in 1986. Brunson spoke highly of Hart, saying, “His energy is just relentless. It doesn’t stop.”
The Knicks are chasing their 13th straight playoff victory, which would mark the second-longest single-season streak in NBA history. Only Golden State has surpassed this with 15 consecutive playoff wins in 2017.
Spurs guard De’Aaron Fox acknowledged the importance of winning home games but noted, “Obviously you want to win every game that you have on your home court, but it’s not the way it happens every day.” Fox emphasized the team’s focus on addressing the necessary improvements.
