The Maine Senate race is attracting significant attention as Democratic challenger Graham Platner faces Republican incumbent Susan Collins in a tightly contested electoral battle. Recent polling data, conducted by President Donald Trump’s pollster, Tony Fabrizio, suggests Platner’s campaign is struggling amidst numerous controversies, though the race remains close.
Between June 1 and 3, a poll from the Collins-aligned Pine Tree Results PAC found Platner and Collins tied at 46 percent. Platner’s favorability has slightly increased from 35 percent in January to 40 percent in June, yet his unfavorable rating has risen significantly from 29 percent to 49 percent within the same timeframe.
The polling memo stated, “Graham Platner’s image had cratered with his unfavorables nearly doubling.”
A prior poll in January recorded Platner at 44 percent of the vote, closely trailing Collins, who stood at 45 percent. The current political landscape shows a deadlocked race, with Trump’s pollster warning of potential further erosion of Platner’s support due to continuing controversies.
Particularly detrimental to Platner has been the revelation of his activity on Kik, a social media platform criticized by the National Center on Sexual Exploitation. Concerns about Platner’s connections to the site have led nearly 60 percent of voters to express hesitancy in supporting him. Reports from various media outlets link Platner to an active Kik profile, yet evidence of improper communication remains absent.
The memo warns that Collins and her allies must continue pressuring Platner as Democratic efforts try to rescue his campaign. Platner’s chances on betting platforms have nosedived to their lowest since he announced his candidacy.
Controversies Surrounding Platner
Graham Platner, an oyster farmer and Marine Corps veteran, launched his Senate campaign in August 2025. He has received endorsements from progressive figures like Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren, focusing on housing affordability, universal health care, labor union support, and reducing billionaires’ influence.
However, Platner’s message has been obscured by controversies since October 2025. Old Reddit posts featuring offensive language and rhetoric encouraging political violence have resurfaced, prompting Platner’s apologies and assertions that they do not represent his current views.
In the same month, Platner faced scrutiny over a skull-and-crossbones tattoo linked to Nazi imagery. He apologized and covered up the tattoo. Further challenges emerged in May with reports of sexually explicit messages to various women, resulting in public expressions of regret by Platner.
The latest controversy involved “unsettling” behavior claims from women Platner dated, reported by the New York Times. Platner disputes any accusations of physical intimidation, labeling the allegations as politically motivated.
Platner addressed these issues publicly, voicing concerns over attempts to distract from key campaign topics like healthcare and taxing the wealthy.
Platner has also openly discussed his mental health struggles. In response to the New York Times report, he released a statement acknowledging a past dark period influenced by undiagnosed PTSD and alcohol use.
The Race’s Future
With the primary election days away, Platner is unlikely to withdraw, as winning could be pivotal for Democrats seeking Senate control in November. The impact of Platner’s controversies on voters remains uncertain.
Despite the New York Times report, polls such as one from UMass Lowell show Platner slightly leading Collins with 48 to 43 percent, albeit with undecided voters and minor candidate support.
John Cluverius of UMass Lowell noted, “The Maine U.S. Senate race is shaping up to be the most contentious in the country, presenting challenges for both candidates.”
Platner’s lesser-known status compared to Collins could make voters more susceptible to new information.
The Democratic primary election is scheduled for June 9, deciding if Platner will advance to face Collins on November 3.
