Protesters Clash with Police at New Jersey Immigration Center

2 weeks ago 0

Protests outside Delaney Hall, an immigration detention facility in New Jersey, have led to several arrests following tensions between activists and law enforcement. The protesters, advocating for open borders, blocked vehicle access and clashed with police, resulting in confrontations and detentions.

Newark Police, responding to the situation, enforced crowd dispersal orders, with some activists reportedly resisting and engaging in property damage. According to Newark Public Safety Director Emanuel Miranda, such actions prompted the declaration of an unlawful assembly after attempts to ensure public safety were ignored.

Recent arrests included Allison Wuu from Fort Collins and Lucas Jimenez from Hoboken, with additional detainees identified as Drew Larsen, Solomon Dunston, Rayaan Baywa, and Julianna Wurst. Each faces charges of rioting and failing to disperse, with legal processes underway.

“No one has the right to come into our city, destroy personal property, or incite violence,” wrote Miranda on social media, urging peaceful protests.

Video footage has documented altercations, showing activists blocking and damaging vehicles attempting to pass through the facility. Authorities reported out-of-state protesters participating in these events, with claims of organized efforts and repeat offenders involved in similar actions across different states.

On Monday, Border czar Tom Homan discussed the situation on ‘FOX & Friends’, suggesting that many charged individuals have previously been identified at protests beyond New Jersey. Acknowledging the presence of peaceful local protesters, he emphasized the external involvement in violent incidents.

Furthermore, reports of a hunger strike among detainees since May 23 highlighted dissatisfaction with accommodations. Despite these claims, purchases of snacks by detainees during this period suggest otherwise, as noted by Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin, who commented on the provision of necessary sustenance.

The confrontations have resulted in approximately 90 arrests, reflecting ongoing tensions at the facility. The Associated Press contributed additional information to this report.
