Houston attorney Dan Cogdell, known for defending Ken Paxton in court since a 2015 securities fraud indictment, has now shifted support to Paxton’s opponent in a high-stakes Texas Senate race. After nearly a decade of working with Paxton, Cogdell announced his endorsement for Democratic candidate James Talarico on his June 8 episode of the Cogdell Law Uncensored podcast.
Cogdell’s Support for Talarico
“I defended Ken Paxton for years in the impeachment trial and in state criminal cases,” Cogdell stated during the podcast. “But in my view, respectfully, I think Ken has lost sight of his core mission, which is to represent the people of Texas.” He emphasized that Talarico, a state representative, focuses on unity and can collaborate with Democrats, independents, and Republicans.
Talarico expressed gratitude for Cogdell’s support: “If you voted for John Cornyn, you have a place in this campaign. If you’re a Republican tired of the corruption you’re seeing in government, you have a place in this campaign. Even if you’re Ken Paxton’s impeachment lawyer, you have a place in this campaign. We are building a people-powered movement that welcomes Republicans, Democrats, and Independents alike.”
Significance of Cogdell’s Endorsement
Cogdell’s backing holds weight beyond a typical endorsement due to his close association with Paxton during critical moments of his political career. His involvement in Paxton’s legal defense during several controversies highlights a significant shift in support towards Talarico.
This development allows Talarico to showcase backing from a figure once within Paxton’s inner circle, reinforcing the narrative that this race centers on leadership and governance in Texas. The endorsement follows a GOP primary that split Republican support between traditional figures and Paxton loyalists.
Talarico aims to attract voters from various political backgrounds, an essential strategy in a state where Democrats have struggled to secure statewide office for decades.
Texas Senate Race Overview
The contest between Talarico and Paxton is a focal point in national politics as Democrats test their ability to compete in Texas using a message with bipartisan appeal. Elected in 2018, Talarico promotes coalition-building and pragmatic policies.
Paxton secured the Republican nomination by defeating incumbent Senator John Cornyn in a challenging primary, with backing from former President Donald Trump.
Cogdell has mentioned that his professional relationship with Paxton concluded after years of legal service, clarifying his broader obligation as a citizen guides his current political decisions. This separation allows Cogdell to critique Paxton effectively while maintaining a professional distance.
A poll from Texas Public Opinion Research indicates Talarico leads Paxton by a 57-point margin among moderate voters and by 43 points among independents. Among Cornyn’s supporters in the Republican runoff, 44 percent intend to vote for Paxton, while 30 percent support Talarico. The poll included 1,670 likely voters and has a margin of error of +/- 2.8 percentage points.
Democrats face challenges in Texas, having not elected a Democrat to the U.S. Senate since Lloyd Bentsen’s last term in 1988. Talarico’s coalition-building with Republicans and independents is crucial for his success in November.
Upcoming Senate Race Developments
The race now enters a more intense phase with both campaigns expected to extend their outreach across Texas via rallies, town halls, and media appearances. As the election approaches, endorsements and efforts to build diverse coalitions will likely be pivotal in shaping the Senate contest.
