Obama Presidential Center to Feature Tafari Campbell Tribute Restaurant

2 weeks ago 0

Former President Barack Obama’s presidential center in Chicago will open a comfort-food restaurant named after the late chef, Tafari Campbell, who was a cherished friend and integral part of the Obama family. The restaurant aims to honor Campbell’s contributions as both a member of the White House culinary team and a close personal chef to the Obamas.

Campbell passed away tragically in July 2023, drowning while paddle boarding near the Obamas’ Martha’s Vineyard residence. The Obama Foundation shared news of the restaurant’s opening in a recent press release, highlighting Campbell’s impressive career and his personal connection to the family. Campbell had served as a chef for two presidents, joining the Bush administration before continuing under Obama.

“Tafari Campbell was known as a warm, fun-loving, and humble soul who used his immense gifts and passion for food to spread joy and bring people together,” the Obama Foundation noted. A painting of Campbell by Kate Capshaw will be displayed in the restaurant.

Tafari’s Kitchen, the name chosen for the establishment, plans to incorporate recipes inspired by personal tales from the Obama family. Among dishes featured will be “Mrs. Robinson’s Red Rice,” a traditional recipe passed down from Michelle Obama’s late mother, Marian Robinson. Chicago-based chef Cliff Rome, along with Bon Appétit Management, will oversee the menu.

Chef Tafari Campbell first worked at the White House during President George W. Bush’s tenure and stayed on through the Obama administration, forming a strong bond with the 44th president. Known for his culinary talent and ability to foster connections through food, Campbell became the personal chef for the Obamas and remained with them until the end of the administration in 2017.

A statement from the Obamas said, “When we first met him, he was a talented sous chef at the White House – creative and passionate about food, and its ability to bring people together. In the years that followed, we got to know him as a warm, fun, extraordinarily kind person who made all of our lives a little brighter.”

Campbell’s legacy continues through the restaurant, marking an emotional tribute to his impact on the Obama family and community. The Obama Presidential Center, situated on Chicago’s Southside, is set for a grand opening on June 19. Development has been ongoing for over ten years and faced challenges due to design critiques, costs, and public infrastructure expenses, with taxpayers shouldering substantial financial contributions.
