SpaceX Acquires Cursor to Enhance AI Capabilities

1 week ago 0

SpaceX announced its acquisition of Cursor, an AI code-writing startup, in an all-stock deal worth $60 billion. This move aligns with Elon Musk’s growing interest in artificial intelligence and follows SpaceX’s recent public market debut.

The acquisition stems from an agreement made in April, which offered SpaceX the option to purchase Cursor’s parent company, Anysphere. SpaceX intends to use this opportunity to develop more advanced AI models. The deal was finalized shortly after SpaceX went public last week. SpaceX shares have surged since trading began, elevating Musk to trillionaire status and raising the company’s valuation to approximately $2.5 trillion.

Musk’s interest in AI is demonstrated through various initiatives. He previously founded xAI, which created the Grok chatbot. This was a competitive move against giants like OpenAI’s ChatGPT. In February, SpaceX merged with xAI, forming a venture valued over $1 trillion. Additionally, plans for a major AI chip production facility in Texas have been announced. SpaceX has collaborated with Google and Anthropic to secure computing resources.

Historically, Musk’s companies have merged within his portfolio rather than acquiring external businesses. The impending acquisition of Cursor is set to conclude in the third quarter as stated in regulatory filings. Established in 2022, Cursor rapidly gained traction with tech firms and secured substantial investments from influential capital firms such as Thrive Capital and Andreessen Horowitz.

Initially, Cursor faced growth hurdles due to limited access to computing resources necessary for AI model training. The merger with SpaceX offers a solution by providing access to xAI’s robust infrastructure.
