NASCAR is set to hold its inaugural race on a military installation at San Diego’s Naval Base Coronado. This event, coinciding with the U.S. Navy’s 250th anniversary, will feature all three national series navigating a new road course. A highlight of the event is the Haas Factory Team’s tribute to former Naval aviator and 41st U.S. president, George H.W. Bush, through a special livery for Cole Custer’s No. 41 Chevrolet Camaro.
The striking design, unveiled in partnership with Texas A&M University, is set to compete in Sunday’s Anduril 250: Race the Base. Joe Custer, President of Haas Factory Team, expressed pride in this collaboration, stating, “President Bush lived one of the greatest American lives. We’re all better off today because of what he did for our country. For our team to race the No. 41 in tribute to him, and now celebrate all he stood for, is a rare honor.”
George H.W. Bush, remembered as one of the youngest Naval aviators during World War II, enlisted on his 18th birthday. He served in the Pacific and survived being shot down in 1944. His legacy continues to be honored through initiatives such as this special NASCAR tribute.
Sam Bush LeBlond, Bush’s grandson, highlighted the significance of such honors, noting his grandfather once cited an aircraft carrier named after him as one of his proudest achievements. Bush’s values of service, duty, and love of country remain influential.
This weekend promises to be memorable as NASCAR races at Naval Base Coronado, celebrating history and heritage through motorsport.
