Fans are expressing their opinions after Tom Holland shared his choice for the next Spider-Man. Holland, who will reprise his role in the upcoming movie, “Spider-Man: Brand New Day,” announced his pick in a conversation with Esquire.
Holland expressed his desire to mentor his successor in the way Robert Downey Jr. mentored him during his initial three films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Holland said, “In the way that Robert Downey was such a mentor for me in my first three movies, I would love to be that person for whoever is next.”
Regarding his choice for the role, Holland shared, “Owen Cooper would be awesome.” Cooper, who is 16 years old, gained recognition for his role in Netflix’s “Adolescence.” Holland praised Cooper’s talent, noting, “Obviously he’s super-talented and the talk of the town right now.”
Cooper won Best Supporting Actor at the Critics Choice Awards, Golden Globes, British Academy Television Awards and Emmys for his performance in a limited series.
Fans have taken to social media to discuss Holland’s choice. One fan commented, “Owen Cooper was phenomenal in Adolescence. He absolutely has the acting chops for Peter Parker.” Another added, “If Marvel actually pulls the trigger on this, the casting would be absolutely elite.”
A different message praised Holland’s decision-making and remarked, “Tom Holland already thinking about the future—classy move. Owen Cooper is the hot name right now, and Holland’s endorsement carries weight. Passing the torch with grace.”
Despite the excitement, some fans are hesitant to see Holland leave the role, which he has played since “Captain America: Civil War” in 2016. One fan expressed, “Tom Holland out here doing God’s work by naming his successor Owen Cooper as the next Spider-Man? I see the vision but I’m still not ready to say goodbye to Tom’s Peter Parker.”
Holland previously spoke about his hopes for the franchise in an interview with Empire earlier this month. He mentioned, “For whoever’s next, whether that is a Miles Morales or a Spider-Gwen or a Spider-Woman or something like that, I would love to be a part of setting up the next chapter.” Holland added, “Whatever that looks like, I don’t know. But if I could do what Downey did for me, then I would be so content swinging off into the sunset.”
“Spider-Man: Brand New Day” is set to premiere on July 31.
