Jazz Chisholm Jr., the New York Yankees second baseman, experienced an unexpected setback during a game against the Chicago White Sox. In the fourth inning, he fouled a pitch that rebounded awkwardly, causing him to suffer an injury. The incident forced Chisholm to leave the game as Anthony Volpe replaced him in the lineup.
Early in the season, Chisholm faced difficulties, hitting only .164 with no home runs in his first 21 games. Despite his ambitious goal of reaching 50 home runs and 50 stolen bases, his performance initially faltered. However, in his subsequent 49 games, Chisholm improved significantly. He boosted his batting average to .254 with an .811 OPS, surpassing last year’s numbers of a .242 average and an .813 OPS.
Chisholm’s injury adds to the Yankees’ growing list of challenges this season. Key players such as Aaron Judge, with a broken rib, and Giancarlo Stanton, dealing with calf issues, are already sidelined. Additionally, Trent Grisham and Cy Young hopeful Max Fried are also on the injured list.
Despite these setbacks, the Yankees maintain their lead in the American League East, holding a 3.0-game advantage. They are among the few American League teams with a record above .500, alongside the Tampa Bay Rays, Chicago White Sox, Cleveland Guardians, and Seattle Mariners.
