Christian Pulisic attempted to recover in time for the United States Men’s National Team’s second World Cup game against Australia. Unfortunately, a week was not enough for recovery from his calf injury sustained in the World Cup opener. As a result, the team will be without their key player on the field.
United States manager Mauricio Pochettino delivered the news prior to the match on FOX Sports. Pulisic was forced off the field before halftime in their opening game against Paraguay due to the injury despite contributing an assist in the win.
Pochettino faced numerous inquiries about Pulisic’s availability for the Australia match, and he refrained from providing a definitive answer until recently. On Thursday, he mentioned that Pulisic’s condition had improved significantly since the injury occurred and hinted that he could be available for the subsequent game against Turkey.
Pochettino expressed, “Christian is making a tremendous effort to get ready,” acknowledging Pulisic’s eagerness to rejoin his team on the field.
Meanwhile, Sebastian Berhalter replaced Pulisic in the match against Paraguay. Midfielder Malik Tillman elevated his performance in Pulisic’s absence, showcasing impressive skills.
Australia’s victory over Turkey raised the stakes for this match, determining the leader of Group D. A win would be significant for the United States, marking the first series of back-to-back victories in the World Cup since its inception and securing a knockout round spot.
The absence of Pulisic undoubtedly poses more challenges for the U.S. team as they strive to maintain success in the tournament.
