Michelle Obama and George W. Bush’s Notable Friendship at Presidential Center Opening

5 days ago 0

The enduring friendship between former First Lady Michelle Obama and former President George W. Bush was evident once again at the opening ceremony of the Obama Presidential Center in Chicago. The event took place on a Thursday, symbolizing a significant display of camaraderie.

In a heartwarming gesture, Bush handed Obama a tin of Altoids, reminiscent of a memorable moment from Sen. John McCain’s funeral in 2018. During the funeral, Bush discreetly passed Obama what was later identified as a cough drop. Reflecting on their bond, Michelle Obama shared on “Today,” “President Bush and I, we are forever seatmates because of protocol. That’s how we sit at all the official functions, so he is my partner in crime at every major event where all the ‘formers’ gather.” She added that the gesture was simple and described Bush as “a wonderful man” and “a funny man.”

At the funeral for Bush’s father, another moment saw the former president handing Obama a piece of candy or a mint during their handshake. Bush later clarified in an interview with his daughter, Jenna Bush Hager, that it was an Altoid he handed to Obama at McCain’s funeral. Regardless of whether it was a cough drop or a mint, the underlying message of friendship remained evident. Bush remarked, “It turns out the country is starved to see a White center-right Republican and an African American center-left Democrat having fun and being able to converse, not as political figures, but as citizens.”

The gift of Altoids was well-received during the ceremony, as Obama smiled and displayed the tin in a photo with Bush. The event was notable, with Bush, his wife Laura, and several “formers” like Bill and Hillary Clinton and Joe and Jill Biden sitting together on stage with the Obamas.
