Challenges in the Peace Process Between the U.S. and Iran

4 days ago 0

Despite both Washington and Tehran not wanting the peace process to entirely collapse, diplomats foresee numerous challenges and deep-seated distrust affecting negotiations.

On June 20, 2026, Vice President JD Vance had planned to travel to Zurich on Friday to sign a Memorandum of Understanding on behalf of the United States. This trip was canceled, as was the visit by the Iranian representatives. The cancellations highlighted the complexities involved in reaching an agreement.

Negotiators from both countries have set a 60-day timeframe to evolve the Memorandum of Understanding, which was initially signed with a flourish by President Donald Trump. The goal is to transform this initial agreement into a comprehensive peace accord. The process, however, is expected to be rife with obstacles.
