Arrival of Giant Pandas Strengthens U.S.-China Relations

On September 27, 2026, two giant pandas from China reached the United States, as part of a bilateral agreement between the Chinese and American governments. Zoo Atlanta confirmed the arrival on Sunday.

The pandas, Ping Ping and Fu Shuang, landed at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport aboard the specially designated ‘FedEx Panda Express’ Boeing 777 aircraft. Raymond B. King, Zoo Atlanta’s president and CEO, expressed excitement about this event, highlighting its significance for the city of Atlanta and the state of Georgia.

“This is a thrilling day for Zoo Atlanta and a historic moment for the City of Atlanta, the state of Georgia and beyond,” King expressed in a statement shared on social media. “We are elated to welcome Ping Ping and Fu Shuang and could not be more excited about sharing that joy with our members, guests, city and community in the coming weeks.”

The pandas will remain quarantined for approximately a month in a biosecure part of the wildlife park’s new giant panda complex. Although park officials have not finalized a public viewing date, the anticipation grows.

Chinese President Xi Jinping announced the panda loan during a three-day summit with former President Trump in Washington. The announcement marked one of the few substantive outcomes of the state visit. In this visit, Xi emphasized the pandas as symbolic of the ‘friendship between the Chinese and Americans.’ The exchange aims to enhance goodwill, utilizing pandas as a diplomatic tool known as ‘panda diplomacy.’

This agreement revives the presence of pandas in Zoo Atlanta, which previously lacked them after saying goodbye to its last pandas in 2024. The pandas, Ping Ping and Fu Shuang, are on loan for a decade. Both were born in 2020 at the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding.

Currently, the National Zoo and the San Diego Zoo also host pandas from China, showcasing the ongoing cultural and diplomatic ties between the two nations.
