Global parenting expert Jo Frost, widely recognized as ‘Supernanny,’ has raised concerns over a worrying trend. She suggests that many modern parents, by prioritizing convenience, may hinder their children’s development of essential life skills.
Frost, known for her reality TV show “Supernanny,” recently gained attention with a social media post. She emphasized how current parenting methods could prevent children from developing resilience and independence.
In a viral Instagram video, Frost discussed a pattern she’s observed in the families she coaches. Parents are enabling dependency, rather than fostering independence in their children.
“We’re keeping children in strollers who should be walking. Four-year-olds are still using dummies meant as temporary aids. Seven-year-olds can’t brush their teeth without an electric brush. Eight-year-olds struggle with basic table manners. Nine-year-olds lack fundamental bathroom hygiene skills,” Frost pointed out.
During a “Fox & Friends” appearance, Frost explained her motivation for speaking out. Parents frequently email her, expressing concerns about their kids struggling with basic life skills due to enabling habits.
“You must let them face some challenges,” she advised. “We shouldn’t create a generation reliant on parental aid. We need resilience and independence.” Frost urged parents to pursue long-term goals instead of opting for quick conveniences.
For young children, Frost encouraged parents to focus on basic independence skills, such as personal hygiene, table manners, tying shoelaces, and participating in household chores. She called for outdoor activities like biking, running, and playing.
“I know modern life is hectic,” she acknowledged. “But it’s about intention. Each time we step in or skip teaching because it’s less messy or time-consuming, we strip them of the chance to feel capable. Children want to feel capable,” Frost stressed in her social media message.
