James Burrows, a well-loved director in Hollywood, died at the age of 85. His family confirmed his passing and celebrated his remarkable life and legacy. He died peacefully, surrounded by family.

A statement described Burrows as one of television history’s most influential directors. Known as a legendary mentor and creative force, he played a crucial role in shaping comedy and brought joy to audiences worldwide.

Burrows’ career included directing over 1,000 television episodes. He significantly contributed to some of the most iconic series ever produced. Dubbed the ‘king of the multi-cam sitcom,’ Burrows gained prominence with ‘The Mary Tyler Moore Show’ and then ‘Taxi,’ where he won two Emmy Awards.

He co-created ‘Cheers,’ directing all but 35 of its 275 episodes. His work earned him six Emmy Awards during the show’s run.

The statement noted Burrows’ lasting legacy. Beyond his professional achievements, he was known for his kindness, generosity, and belief in people. He had a rare ability to remember every person’s name and make them feel valued.

Burrows’ career included directing the pilot of ‘Friends’ and every episode of ‘Will & Grace.’ He also worked on ‘Two and a Half Men,’ ‘The Big Bang Theory,’ ‘Two Broke Girls,’ ‘Frasier,’ among others.

Burrows leaves behind his wife Debbie, his four daughters, and seven grandchildren. Actors like Jennifer Aniston and Debra Messing paid tribute to him on social media, celebrating his influence and kindness.

Throughout his career, Burrows received 11 Emmy Awards and five Directors’ Guild Awards, and he was inducted into the Television Hall of Fame in 2006. His peers expressed deep sorrow upon his death, sharing memories and the impact he had on their lives.

Debra Messing shared heartfelt messages on Instagram, recalling his talent and revolutionary impact on television. She noted that Burrows changed her life and provided support and guidance over the years.

Aniston, who worked with Burrows on ‘Friends,’ referred to him as ‘Papa Burrows’ on Instagram. She shared how he was a father figure who guided, celebrated and protected her during her career.

James Burrows is survived by his wife, Debbie, and his daughters: Katherine, Margaret, and Ellie with his first wife Linda Solomon, and Paris, Debbie’s daughter from a previous relationship, as well as his seven grandchildren.
