Smoke rises as brush fires continue to affect west Miami-Dade County, just west of Doral. These fires, which have scorched nearly 22,000 acres since last week, are nearing containment but still pose air quality challenges. Chris Fisher, a meteorologist from the National Weather Service in Miami, explained that despite high containment, the fires are still active within their boundaries.
The Quarry Fire, located near Northwest 137th Avenue and 41st Street, has burned approximately 19,000 acres and was reported as 97% contained. Nearby, the Wells Fire, situated close to Northwest 122nd Avenue and 58th Street, has consumed around 2,750 acres, with 85% containment. Another smaller wildfire in the Everglades, affecting 330 acres, was only 15% contained as of Monday.
Even though the containment is high, it is still burning. It just means that it’s burning inside that containment.– Chris Fisher, National Weather Service
The fires began after a thunderstorm on June 14 ignited the Quarry and Wells fires. Firefighters have been actively engaged in battling these blazes, leading to the evacuation of hundreds of residents. Nearby communities have been affected by smoke, soot, and ash.
While signs point to the fires calming down, the air quality in Miami-Dade County remains a concern, leading to an alert lasting through Tuesday at 3 p.m. Fisher advised that surface smoke may intensify overnight due to weakened thunderstorm winds. Tuesday’s forecast predicts showers and thunderstorms, contributing to patchy smoke over the metro area. The weather is expected to be humid, with temperatures ranging from mid-90s to upper-70s.
Fisher emphasized the importance of minimizing outdoor activities, especially in the evenings and mornings. Recommendations include staying indoors with closed windows. Those with respiratory sensitivities and individuals working outside at night are particularly vulnerable.
