LAUSD Superintendent Resigns Amid FBI Investigation

1 day ago 0

The superintendent of the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD), Alberto Carvalho, has resigned following an FBI raid on his premises earlier this year. Carvalho, who managed the nation’s second-largest school district, announced his decision on Sunday, aiming to eliminate distractions from student education.

“Placing students first has always guided my work,” Carvalho stated. “Because I believe our schools must remain focused on students and learning without distraction, I am resigning as Superintendent of LAUSD effective today, June 21, 2026.”

His resignation coincides with an ongoing investigation related to an unsuccessful multimillion-dollar AI school contract and potential conflicts of interest. This investigation is thought to involve a $6 million contract awarded to AllHere, a defunct startup, for a student-facing chatbot project that collapsed in 2024. The contract raised multiple issues, including alleged embezzlement and privacy concerns.

The end of Carvalho’s four-year tenure, starting in 2022 and reaffirmed in 2025, marks a period where he emphasized significant achievements like record-breaking graduation rates and academic improvements for disadvantaged students. In his resignation letter, he expressed gratitude to students, staff, and the community.

“I leave grateful — to our students and families, whose protection we prioritized, for trusting us, to our exceptional and hard-working teachers, leaders, and staff at every level for their tireless dedication,” Carvalho wrote. He also thanked the community and stakeholders for allowing him to serve.

LAUSD’s Board responded to Carvalho’s resignation with a commitment to uphold public trust. “The Board remains steadfast in its commitment to ensuring stability, continuity, and continued progress through strong leadership,” the district stated. Acting superintendent Andrés E. Chait will lead the district temporarily while a permanent replacement is found.

The FBI’s involvement stems from searches executed at locations linked to Carvalho and associates, including Debra Kerr, an edtech salesperson with longstanding ties to Carvalho. These searches might relate to the failed contract with AllHere and involve complex legal matters, including whistleblower allegations.
