The Indiana Fever secured a victory over the Phoenix Mercury with a score of 86-77 at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis on Monday night. The game was marked by chaos, resulting in five technical fouls and one ejection.
Caitlin Clark, an All-Star guard for the Fever, received a technical foul for clapping. It was her fifth technical of the season, tying her with Angel Reese for the most technical fouls in the WNBA.
“They said that Caitlin got it for clapping, so I guess that’s taunting,” stated Fever head coach Stephanie White during the postgame press conference.
Clark expressed strong sentiments toward the officials. She criticized the technical foul she received, saying it was excessive for clapping and questioning the likelihood of future suspensions due to technicals.
James Boyd from The Athletic asked Clark about her awareness of avoiding future technicals, which would lead to an automatic one-game suspension after eight instances.
“I mean, I’m gonna play with emotion, I’m gonna play with passion, and if they’re gonna give me a technical foul for clapping, then so be it,” Clark responded. “The league can come back and review that play, and I’d love to hear what they say.”
Clark may face a fine for her comments, but there is recent precedent that could benefit her. Paige Bueckers, an All-Star guard for the Dallas Wings, had a similar technical for clapping which the WNBA rescinded two days later.
In Monday’s game, Clark finished with an impressive 24 points, nine assists, and three rebounds. Clark’s performance set a new record, marking her sixth consecutive game scoring at least 20 points with five rebounds, the longest streak in WNBA history according to espnW.
The Fever currently hold a 10-7 record, while the Mercury sit at 5-13. These two teams will face each other again at Gainbridge Fieldhouse on Wednesday.
