San Francisco 49ers general manager John Lynch has indicated that Brandon Aiyuk’s tenure with the team is likely over. Aiyuk’s relationship with the 49ers soured after the team voided the guaranteed money on his contract extension. This decision followed Aiyuk’s refusal to attend rehabilitation sessions for significant knee injuries he sustained during the 2024 season, from which he has not yet recovered.
The 49ers have been trying to find a trade partner for Aiyuk, but no agreement has been reached. Tight end George Kittle expressed his feelings about Aiyuk’s situation, wishing him “luck” in future endeavors.
“I used to watch him train early in the mornings. He was fast, clocking over 22 miles per hour and could stop on a dime. But that was eight months ago, so I’m not sure about now,” Kittle shared on Barstool Sports’ ‘Pardon My Take’ podcast.
There have been persistent rumors about Aiyuk potentially joining the Washington Commanders. Aiyuk recently added to the speculation by shouting support for the Commanders in an Instagram video.
Aiyuk has voiced his dissatisfaction with the 49ers, criticizing them for extending his contract, which he describes as “dumb” and “stupid.” He also suggests the team is hesitant to release him, fearing his performance might excel elsewhere.
Although Aiyuk was put on the reserve/left team list in December for not attending team activities, his performance before his injury was notable. Aiyuk caught 24 passes for 374 yards in 2024 and had a standout 2023 season with 1,342 yards on 75 receptions, contributing to the 49ers’ Super Bowl appearance.
