A Changing Climate in Switzerland

The majestic scenery of Switzerland often evokes images of cool, crisp mountain air. However, my recent visit to Lake Lucerne was different. The normally refreshing climate was replaced by heat and humidity, making it feel more like Luzon in the Philippines than the Swiss Alps.

As I walked along the lake, the stunning backdrop of white-capped Alps was still present. Yet, the air felt heavy and oppressive, akin to moving through hot, dense material. The waterfront was lively with soccer fans draped in red and white, cheering for Switzerland in their World Cup match against Bosnia-Herzegovina. Every goal was met with an explosive cheer that pierced the air.

This visit reminded me of my previous experience in Switzerland, where I hiked the Rhône Glacier. A Swiss glaciologist highlighted the country’s vulnerability to climate change. The rise in temperature extremes leads to faster glacier retreat, a pressing concern for the region.

Although Switzerland celebrated a victory in their World Cup match, they face ongoing challenges with climate change. The need for effective climate action is crucial to protect the landscape and environment.
