Abolition of Slavery
As America approaches its 250th anniversary, citizens reflect on the nation’s greatest achievements, according to an NBC News poll sponsored by More Perfect. A significant portion of respondents highlighted the abolition of slavery. The ratification of the 13th Amendment in 1865 formally ended slavery, liberating over 4 million enslaved individuals. A Texas resident emphasized the transformative impact of this achievement, appreciating how laws were crafted to improve society.
“The abolition of slavery was a magnificent achievement for us. I think one of our strengths was we used to make laws to help people,” he asserted.
Others recognized it as a turning point for equal opportunity, acknowledging that it laid a foundation for freedom and rights.
“It gave freedom for everyone. Everybody has equal rights. You have a right to speak, to work, to education, everything,” commented a woman in her 50s.
Respondents also pointed to continued progress in expanding rights, such as Black Americans’ advancements and women’s suffrage with the 19th Amendment in 1920.
World War II and Military Success
On the world stage, military achievements featured prominently, especially the U.S. victory in World War II. A Washington state man noted its preservation of Western values and the shift away from dictatorship.
“If we had lost, freedom would have been lost. Democracy won over fascism,” he observed.
Others highlighted World War II as a unifying moment for America. A Virginian mentioned it as a time of strong patriotism, contrasting it with current political frustrations.
“The United States is a joke in the eyes of the world right now because of our current leader,” he criticized.
For some, the victory symbolized America’s global standing and military prowess.
“World War champs. The U.S. is the big daddy of the world,” noted a Tennessee man.
Technological Advancements: The Moon Landing
Technological achievements, like the moon landing, also stood out in the poll. With NASA’s Artemis program planning a return to the moon, the Apollo missions were hailed as a pinnacle of scientific accomplishment.
“Putting a man on the moon. The Apollo missions were amazing considering the technology at the time,” a young man from Idaho reflected.
Others saw the moon landing as a testament to American innovation across various domains.
“The U.S. marked its status as a great democracy and technological leader,” remarked a Massachusetts man.
Overall, the poll revealed diverse perspectives on America’s historical achievements, focusing on civil rights, military victories, and scientific breakthroughs.
