A series of five deaths linked to a trail near Michigan State University is raising alarm. The Lansing Police Department is probing these incidents, suspecting a possible serial killer might be targeting individuals at night along the Lansing River Trail. The victims appear to be homeless White men, complicating the investigation due to the lack of digital and physical footprints often used in such inquiries.
Criminological Challenges
Dr. David Hayes, a criminologist, highlighted the challenges of investigating crimes against unhoused individuals. Without the usual digital or routine patterns available for people with stable housing, it becomes difficult to connect the cases. If the cases are associated, it represents a tragic scenario where a killer preys on vulnerable populations.
Safety Measures at Michigan State University
The university’s Department of Police and Public Safety has stepped up security along the River Trail. Measures include additional LED lighting, emergency phones, and integrated public safety cameras. Police officers routinely patrol the trail on bicycles. Students are encouraged to remain vigilant, especially during nighttime visits.
Victim and Suspect Details
Among the five deaths, the youngest was Daniel Lusk, 22, who was found fatally stabbed under the East Michigan Avenue bridge. The stabbing took place under a mile from the university campus.
Authorities arrested Edward Joseph Smith, 23, on September 3, in relation to this particular incident. However, Smith has not been charged with any crimes related to the other deaths.
Community Assurance
Lansing Mayor Andy Schor assured residents and visitors of the safety of the downtown area and the trail. The Lansing Police Department has significantly increased its presence in these locations both day and night. The investigation remains ongoing, as police continue to look for connections among the incidents.
