Christa Pike has been discharged from the hospital and is back in prison following a failed execution attempt. Her legal representatives have confirmed her return to Deborah K. Johnson Rehabilitation Center, where she has resided for over three decades.
“Christa Pike was discharged from a local hospital and is now at Deborah K. Johnson Rehabilitation Center where she has been housed for more than 30 years,” stated her attorneys, Stephen Ferrell, Luke Ihnen from Federal Defender Services of Eastern Tennessee, and Randy Spivey and Kelly Gleason from the TN Office of the Post Conviction Defender, in an email to Newsweek.
The statement expressed her gratitude towards first responders and medical personnel for their efforts during the incident. It also mentioned her ongoing medical care at the prison, with her legal team committed to monitoring her recovery process.
Pike, aged 50, was admitted to a hospital after she survived two doses of the lethal drug pentobarbital on September 30. The state attempted her execution for the 1995 murder of her classmate, Colleen Slemmer. On Thursday, her attorneys described her physical recovery as “remarkable,” although concerns persist regarding the potential long-term impacts of the failed execution and her legal status.
The incident has reignited debates over the methods states employ to administer the death penalty, especially concerning lethal injection.
