A tragic plane crash in Tomblaine, eastern France, resulted in the loss of all 11 people on board a skydiving aircraft on Sunday. This incident stands as one of the deadliest light aircraft accidents in the region’s history.
According to Yves Seguy, the prefect of the Meurthe-et-Moselle department, the crash claimed the lives of five instructors, five students, and the pilot. The students were nursing professionals attempting their first skydiving jump, confirmed by Thierry Pechey, head of Meurthe-et-Moselle’s nursing council. Pechey noted they were seeking relief amidst challenging conditions due to the heatwave.
The mayor of Nancy, Mathieu Klein, disclosed the heartbreaking fact that victims perished in full view of their loved ones, who had been prepared to capture the tandem skydives on film. Support teams were deployed to assist grieving relatives and witnesses.
Jean-Christophe Verhaegen’s photo showed the wreckage of the Pilatus PC-6, registered in Germany, which crashed in a grassy area by the Nancy-Essey aerodrome runway. The location was near a residential area and two roads. Klein mentioned the proximity to homes, emphasizing the tragedy could have escalated.
Tomblaine’s mayor Herve Feron described the plane’s unexplained fall during ascent, crashing directly downward. The aircraft was chartered for the skydiving event, a routine practice. Amaury Lacote, deputy public prosecutor in Nancy, stated that a technical investigation is underway to identify the crash’s cause.
Authorities advised the public to avoid the airport vicinity to facilitate emergency services. French Interior Minister Laurent Nunez and Transport Minister Philippe Tabarot are expected to visit the accident site later today.
