Deadly Skydiving Plane Crash in France

A tragic plane crash in northeastern France on Sunday resulted in the deaths of 11 people, including five parachuting instructors, five novice jumpers, and a pilot. The aircraft went down shortly after takeoff from Nancy-Essey Airport.

The Meurthe-et-Moselle Prefecture announced the crash, stating that an operational command center was established in response. The incident raised concerns due to its proximity to residential homes, narrowly avoiding further casualties.

Yves Séguy, the prefect, explained that a malfunction caused the aircraft to ‘fall almost vertically,’ which could have led to more fatalities if it had crashed a few meters away from its actual location.

Data from Flightradar24 confirmed the Pilatus PC-6 turned left sharply after taking off, crashing less than a minute later. Interior Minister Laurent Nunez and Transport Minister Philippe Tabarot visited the crash site, meeting with officials and first responders to address the situation.

Nunez expressed profound emotion about the tragedy and commended the emergency response teams, including firefighters, police, gendarmerie, and civil security personnel, for their coordinated efforts. A psychological emergency unit has been established to support the families affected by this disaster.

The Paris prosecutor’s office assigned the investigation to the Air Transport Gendarmerie’s investigative unit. French Transport Minister Philippe Tabarot highlighted that experts from France’s Bureau d’Enquêtes et d’Analyses are working to determine the exact cause of the crash, marking it as France’s deadliest skydiving aviation accident in approximately 30 years.

BFM-TV reported that residents heard the aircraft’s engine stopping before a loud crash. The wreckage displayed no signs of life upon their arrival at the scene.

This incident in France follows a similar crash in Missouri, USA, a few weeks prior, which also claimed 12 lives. Both cases involved aircraft carrying participants preparing for tandem skydives, with passengers’ families witnessing the devastating events.
