J.T. Poston’s Challenging Round at the Travelers Championship

Golf presents challenges to even the top players. J.T. Poston experienced this at the Travelers Championship on Sunday. With a promising start on the 13th hole, Poston aimed for a low score after reaching greenside in two shots. However, he ended with a score of 12, which disrupted his entire day.

J.T. Poston, ranked 32nd in the Official World Golf Ranking, began the tournament reasonably well. Despite not contending for the lead, he didn’t expect to finish near the bottom. The disastrous score on the 13th hole contributed to his 6-over finish for the day and 1-over for the tournament, landing him in 69th place out of 72 who made the cut.

It’s not really rough, where you can kind of blast it out, Poston remarked, expressing his frustration over his multiple drop balls that returned to the water. It’s into the grain, but it looks like you can get enough golf ball on it, which is why I kept trying to hit a good chip.

The trouble began after a perfect tee shot left him in the fairway. His second shot landed in a greenside bunker, which was not too concerning given his professional skill. Yet, his bunker shot fell short, leaving a chip to make. Things worsened as his chip went across the green into the water on the other side. Poston needed three drops to finally have a putt. On his 10th stroke, he got into a putting position but ended with a score of 12 after a miss and a tap-in.

Poston considered putting from the rough but concluded it wasn’t feasible due to the grain’s impact on the ball’s speed over the green’s false front. I feel like it’s just going to hop and that takes all the speed out of it, he explained.

Unfortunately, the difficulties didn’t stop on the 13th hole. Poston faced a double bogey on the 14th, further denting his score. He concluded the tournament with a round of 76.

As the Travelers Championship progressed, Viktor Hovland and Scottie Scheffler reached a tie at 21-under, leading to a playoff to be held on Monday. Scheffler secured this chance by sinking a crucial putt. Hovland’s putt for victory narrowly missed, allowing Scheffler to seize the opportunity.
