CBS News meteorologist Nikki Nolan estimates over 100 record highs and 200 record warm overnight lows could be set by Saturday evening, potentially breaking century-old records. Temperatures are forecasted to soar 20 to 30 degrees above average.

Washington, D.C. is under an extreme heat watch for Thursday and Friday, with forecast highs of 103. D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser encouraged residents and visitors to stay in the shade and limit outdoor activity during the city’s celebration of the nation’s 250th birthday on July Fourth. The city has more planned fireworks than previous years to mark the occasion.
