Dave Portnoy, known for founding Barstool Sports and his social media presence, recently shared his interest in entering politics by running against New York City’s Mayor Zohran Mamdani. In a conversation with Fox News host Jesse Watters, Portnoy stated that despite never considering politics, the current situation in New York drives him to contemplate participating.

Zohran Mamdani, who was elected as New York’s first Muslim and first South Asian mayor, is recognized for his democratic socialist stance. Though popular among voters, he faces criticism from prominent figures, including Donald Trump, for his radical politics. Portnoy expressed that although he would like to run, he is uncertain of his chances. Mamdani’s office has yet to comment on Portnoy’s statements.

Portnoy, a Boston native, is celebrated for his pizza reviews and recent memoir, “Cancel Me If You Can.” He emphasized his impact in New York City, citing initiatives like the Barstool Fund, which he claims showcase genuine commitment without political motives. Portnoy critiqued politicians, describing them as out-of-touch with real-world experience.

The interview clip gained significant attention online, with Watters sharing it on the social platform X, where it amassed over 5 million views. Portnoy’s criticism of Mamdani is part of a broader online discourse, where he has accused Mamdani of changing New York into an anti-American city. Portnoy pointed to Democratic victories like Darializa Avila Chevalier’s primary win as part of this shift.

Supporters on the left view Mamdani as heralding new Democratic policies. Bernie Sanders commended his potential to inspire nationwide change. Conversely, conservatives express caution about his influence, labeling it a threat to American values. Speaker of the House Mike Johnson warned about similar political figures emerging across the country.

It’s uncertain which party Portnoy would choose or if he would run as an independent. He’s previously shown support for Trump. His remarks reignite discussions about celebrity involvement in politics, echoing the high-profile transition of Trump from reality TV to politics. Other celebrities such as Kanye West and Spencer Pratt have attempted similar transitions with varying success.

This trend prompts debate on political qualifications, with some attributing it to Trump’s influence. Hemant Mehta, an author and YouTuber, criticized this perception shift, while polling expert Nate Lichtman mocked Portnoy’s view on qualifications. Political strategist Mike Nellis doubted Portnoy’s appeal to New Yorkers, citing his affluent background and lack of traditional political experience.
