Norway’s Historic World Cup Victory over Ivory Coast

Despite Haaland’s decisive goal, Ivory Coast continued to press. Diallo had a chance to equalize with a direct free kick in stoppage time, but Orjan Nyland’s leaping save kept Norway ahead.

Norway coach Ståle Solbakken credited his team’s composure after Ivory Coast’s equalizer. “After their equalizer, it was easy to panic. But we got our players in the right position and managed to play our game again,” Solbakken explained.

Haaland had 27 touches, the fewest of any Norway player who played the full match. However, his decisive goal, his fifth in the tournament, showed his impact. This placed him just behind Lionel Messi, who leads with six goals for Argentina.

Nusa’s first World Cup goal came in the 39th minute. His right-footed kick between two defenders eluded Ivory Coast’s goalkeeper Yahia Fofana, curling into the net. This marked Nusa’s ninth international goal in 28 games for Norway.

Diallo’s equalizer followed a give-and-go with Nicolas Pepe, another standout performer for Ivory Coast. Pepe’s previous efforts in the tournament included a double in a prior game, tested Nyland’s agility. Despite Diallo’s earlier defensive efforts, his powerful left-footed shot found the back of the net.
