Traditionalist Catholics Defend Schism Amid Vatican Sanctions

The Society of St. Pius X (SSPX), a group of traditionalist Catholics, has defended its recent actions against Pope Leo XIV by claiming to save souls amid an unjust sanction from the Vatican. The SSPX celebrates the historic Latin Mass and resists reforms within the Catholic Church.

On Wednesday, SSPX consecrated four bishops without papal approval during a large ceremony in Econe, Switzerland. This act is considered one of the most severe violations in church law. In response, Pope Leo XIV called for the ceremony to be canceled, but the SSPX proceeded, leading the Vatican to declare excommunication for its bishops and priests. This move could extend to its followers as well.

The Rev. Davide Pagliarani, leader of SSPX, has positioned the group as custodians of church tradition and victims of unjust Vatican action. In communication with Pope Leo, he emphasized their continued dedication to saving souls despite facing doctrinal and moral challenges within the Church.

Founded in 1970 by French Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre, the SSPX began as a reaction to the Second Vatican Council’s reforms, which altered the Church’s engagement with other faiths and introduced vernacular Mass instead of Latin. Though considered a fringe entity, SSPX has confronted Vatican policies for over fifty years, asserting its adherence to Catholic values as superior to those of the Holy See.

The sharp Vatican response underscores ongoing negotiations with SSPX that have persisted over three pontificates, indicating Pope Leo XIV’s firm stance. According to Rev. Robert Gahl, an ethics scholar at The Catholic University of America, the Vatican’s swift action signals SSPX followers that participation in the schism contradicts Catholic doctrine. SSPX suggests necessity as a rationale for episcopal consecrations, asserting its sacramental services surpass typical church offerings.

Gahl highlights the Vatican’s stark warning that salvation requires church affiliation, emphasizing SSPX’s departure from full communion through defiance of papal directives.
