Grand Canyon rafting guide Kelsey Pfendler achieved a historic solo row across the Pacific Ocean. She arrived in Hawaii after covering over 2,400 miles from California in under 44 days, marking several milestones. Pfendler began her voyage in Monterey, California, aiming to become the first American woman, as well as the youngest and fastest woman, to row solo across the mid-Pacific Ocean.

Arrival in Hawaii

Pfendler reached Honolulu Harbor on her 21-foot boat, Lily, cheered on by hundreds of supporters. Her journey broke the previous women’s ocean rowing record of 86 days and the men’s record of 52 days, according to the Ocean Rowing Society International.

Throughout her adventure, Pfendler shared daily updates with her followers on social media. Her videos captured the physical and mental challenges faced, including blistered hands and sleepless nights. She documented daily survival routines like making fresh water and cooking meals. Emotional reflections on loneliness were shared alongside lighter moments, such as jokes about her distinctive hat tan line.

As Pfendler neared her destination, she expressed her hope to inspire others to pursue daunting challenges. She stated that if her journey could empower even one person, it would be worthwhile. Professionally, Kelsey Pfendler has served as a river guide since 18 and led rafting trips through the Grand Canyon over the past eight years.
