After Elon Musk acquired Twitter in 2022, transforming it into X, Meta responded by launching a competing social platform called Threads. The app quickly surpassed OpenAI’s ChatGPT, achieving a record for fastest 100 million sign-ups.
Since then, Silicon Valley, including Meta, has shifted focus from social media towards artificial intelligence. As a result, Threads faded from the limelight.
Despite this, the platform’s growth continued. Last month, Meta announced that Threads had reached 500 million monthly users, matching the popularity of Mr. Musk’s X.
Threads has evolved to resemble Reddit, providing a space where users join specific communities to discuss topics like television episodes, game recaps, celebrity gossip, and current events. Popular subjects include K-pop, the W.N.B.A., dating, dramedy books, and shows like ‘Heated Rivalry.’
Meta, which also operates Facebook and Instagram, positions Threads as a conversational platform where news and politics take a backseat. The company has developed features to enhance text-based interactions, such as community sections, user recognition with badges, and customizable algorithms.
According to Connor Hayes, head of Threads, the platform’s growth strategy focuses on understanding user intent. He mentioned that Threads aims to achieve one billion users. Reaching this goal would surpass the current 956 million users of Snapchat, as reported in financial documents.
