The Washington Commanders must adjust their plans following the dislocation of quarterback Jayden Daniels’ left elbow. Specialists are now thoroughly examining the MRI results to decide the next steps for their starting quarterback. Daniels is confirmed to miss Sunday’s game against the Seattle Seahawks, with Marcus Mariota stepping in as the starter.
While the Seahawks remain hopeful about the return of their starting quarterback, Sam Darnold, his participation depends on his performance in practice this week. Meanwhile, Daniels is seeking multiple medical opinions to determine the best course of action for his recovery. Commanders coach Dan Quinn stated, “He had imaging done today. He’ll see specialists early this week, Tuesday and Wednesday, and then we’ll go through the process from there. Until we go through that process, I’d be guessing to give you any [timeline].”
Quinn wisely refrains from providing a recovery timeline, as the specialists could recommend surgery, which would terminate Daniels’ season, or they could suggest a rehabilitation program similar to last season, potentially avoiding surgery. However, a rehab program may also sideline Daniels for several weeks.
Last year, Daniels played only seven of 17 games after dislocating the same left elbow, choosing not to undergo surgery to save the season. He missed three games during recovery but re-injured himself in Week 14. Consequently, he was sidelined for the final four games. Consequently, the Commanders now face critical questions about repeating the same recovery path and expecting a different long-term result.
Surgery for an elbow dislocation is rare. It is generally reserved for cases where the elbow cannot maintain alignment or remains unstable after attempted manual realignment, known as a closed reduction. Surgery may also be necessary if ligaments, tendons, or joint capsules are severely damaged, threatening long-term joint function. However, the specifics of Daniels’ MRI results remain unknown, leaving surgery an option but not a certainty.
The Commanders are preparing to face the Seahawks and potentially more games without Daniels, impacting a team that has not yet secured a win this season. Daniels’ arm talent and mobility have been central to Washington’s offensive strategy, so his absence will place significant pressure on both the team and the coaching staff, who must find ways to stabilize the season amid these challenges.
