Kawhi Leonard Returns to Toronto with New Challenges

Kawhi Leonard rejoined the Toronto Raptors after spending seven seasons with the Los Angeles Clippers. His departure from Toronto back in 2019 came after leading the team to its first NBA championship. His time with the Clippers, however, did not result in similar success. The team missed the playoffs in the 2025-26 season and faced early exits in the preceding years.

Leonard’s return prompts reflection on what could have been had he remained in Toronto. Back then, the Raptors roster featured Leonard alongside Kyle Lowry, Serge Ibaka, Marc Gasol, Danny Green, and rising stars like Pascal Siakam, Fred VanVleet, OG Anunoby, and Norman Powell. This lineup seemed poised for continued success.

Today, Leonard finds himself with an entirely new Raptors team. Key among his new teammates is RJ Barrett, a Toronto native who was the No. 3 overall pick for the New York Knicks. Barrett had a strong showing in the Raptors’ playoff series against the Cavs, leading in scoring with averages of 24.1 points, 7.0 rebounds, and 4.0 assists per game, all while maintaining significant playing time.

Draymond Green highlighted the possibility of Barrett being traded, reflecting on team dynamics. He speculated on Leonard’s return and the potential for Barrett’s movement. “The Raptors feel they have a chance with mixing Kawhi with Scottie Barnes. RJ Barrett might be on the move as the team adjusts to different player needs,” Green commented.

Barrett’s future with the Raptors poses strategic questions. At 26 years old, he enters the final year of his contract, earning $29.6 million. His performance last season, with 49.1% shooting from the field, makes him a valuable trade asset. Despite this, Barrett’s role as a key player and local favorite complicates the likelihood of his departure.

There remains a possibility the Raptors could package Barrett in a trade, provided it aligns with their objectives for a major team boost. Yet, given his integral role, Toronto might be cautious about trading him unless it results in significant team advancement.
