OpenAI to Release New Model After Government Suggested Delay

4 weeks ago 0

OpenAI will release its most advanced model series, GPT 5.6, to the public on Thursday after initially delaying the rollout. This delay was at the request of the Trump administration due to cybersecurity concerns. CEO Sam Altman shared the announcement on social platform X late Tuesday night. He encouraged developers by stating “happy building” in a separate post.

This decision followed nearly two weeks after OpenAI announced the model series would be previewed with a select group of partners prior to a public release. The Trump administration did not formally approve the release, stating no such permission was required.

While no binding order was placed, the administration had previously imposed export controls on Anthropic’s models. This led Anthropic to suspend public access until the Commerce Department lifted these export controls, allowing models Fable 5 and Mythos 5 to become accessible again.

Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine) urged the Trump administration to retract parts of a controversial federal grant rule, joining opposition voices concerned about impacts on small and rural communities. Meanwhile, discussions about offshore space launches along U.S. coasts were underway.

On digital currency, Sen. Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) is advocating in the Senate to preserve provisions in the Clarity Act. These provisions ensure that software developers aren’t classified as money transmitters. While facing objections from law enforcement, Wyden argues this clarity supports innovation and focuses law enforcement efforts on criminal activities.
