Norway’s Historic World Cup Journey Led by Erling Haaland

Erling Haaland did not anticipate that Norway would reach the quarterfinals of the 2026 FIFA Men’s World Cup. In a conversation with ESPN’s Connor O’Halloran last month, Haaland shared his thoughts. “I haven’t thought too much about how Norway or I would perform because my main goal was to qualify,” he said. “Honestly, now I’ll take everything as a bonus.”

Despite a tough 2-1 loss to England in Miami on Saturday, July 11, Haaland remained positive. The Manchester City star reflected on Norway’s deepest World Cup run in history. On Instagram, Haaland expressed his gratitude with a quote, “It’s been quite a row, thank you for making it so special,” making reference to Norway’s world-renowned “Viking Row.”

Later, Haaland provided more insights during a press conference. “It’s been unreal, honestly,” he remarked. “The performances, beating Brazil, is one thing, but how we put Norway on the map is maybe what touches me the most. I hope this inspires young people in Norway, showing them that anything is possible.” Haaland sees this achievement as a step towards more success in future European and World Cups.

Haaland also shared what it’s like to be in his shoes currently. “After being in the quarterfinals with Norway and going straight to holiday, it’s quite nice,” he shared. “I’m quite happy with my life. I’m enjoying it. This entire journey has been intense with many impressions and feelings. I believe this changes Norway and me.” This was Norway’s first men’s World Cup appearance since 1998. Haaland, who is the reigning Premier League Golden Boot winner, scored seven goals in his first World Cup.

With his status as one of the world’s leading strikers secure, Haaland can now relax on vacation. Meanwhile, World Cup excitement continues as France faces Spain in one semifinal on Tuesday, July 14. England will compete against Argentina, the defending champions, in the second semifinal on Wednesday, July 15. The World Cup final will take place on Sunday, July 19.
