Darline Graham Nordone shared a deep bond with her brother, Sen. Lindsey Graham. His unexpected death marks another tragedy in her life. Now, she may replace him in the Senate shortly after his passing. President Donald Trump and Sen. Tim Scott want her in the position, with Scott reportedly discussing the possibility with her.

Trump urged South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster to appoint Nordone, calling her a “wonderful sister” and noting this appointment would honor Graham. McMaster is expected to announce his decision at an upcoming news conference attended by Scott. If McMaster appoints Nordone, her role would be temporary, and internal maneuvering to select a permanent successor is ongoing.

The deadline to file for Graham’s full six-year Senate term is July 21, with a special election primary scheduled for Aug. 11. Many South Carolina politicians view the available Senate seat as a rare chance to join the Senate.

Darline Graham Nordone has not held public office. Unlike her brother, she devoted her career to vocational rehabilitation, assisting people with disabilities in South Carolina. After Trump announced the possibility of her appointment, Nordone admitted her devastation to the New York Post.

Graham became Nordone’s legal guardian after their parents died in quick succession when he was in his early 20s. He played a significant role in her upbringing, enlisting in the Air Force to provide her with military benefits, which ensured she completed her education.

In 2015, Nordone described her brother as a blend of brother, father, and mother. Graham frequently included Nordone in his political campaigns during his lengthy career in Congress, stating that her achievements were the highlight of his life.
