House Oversight Committee Questions Kathryn Ruemmler on Epstein Relationship

The House Oversight Committee recently conducted a closed-door session to question former White House counsel Kathryn Ruemmler regarding her relationship with Jeffrey Epstein, the convicted sex offender. Ruemmler, who resigned from her position as Goldman Sachs’ top lawyer due to scrutiny over her ties to Epstein, voluntarily participated in the investigative interview.

Ruemmler’s claim that her relationship with Epstein was limited faced skepticism from lawmakers. Both Republicans and Democrats expressed concern about the nature of her interactions with Epstein. Rep. Suhas Subramanyam, D-Va., dismissed Ruemmler’s attempts to distance herself from Epstein, citing email evidence suggesting a friendly relationship between them. He emphasized the need for a truthful account of the relationship.

“It’s very clear that she had a pretty friendly relationship with him,” said Rep. Subramanyam.

Ruemmler admitted to knowing about Epstein’s massages but claimed ignorance regarding the involvement of underage girls. She faced further criticism for acknowledging Epstein’s character as a registered sex offender while maintaining a connection due to his wealth and influence.

The inquiry arose from emails released by the Justice Department, indicating multiple meetings and exchanges between Ruemmler and Epstein after his 2008 conviction for soliciting a minor. Their interactions reportedly began in 2014 when Ruemmler was a partner at the law firm Latham & Watkins and continued until 2019. Epstein died by suicide in August 2019 while facing federal sex trafficking charges.

House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer, R-Ky., voiced concerns about Ruemmler’s relationship with Epstein, noting her efforts to rehabilitate Epstein’s image following his conviction.

“Looking at the communication between Ruemmler and Epstein is how she tried and worked as hard as anyone — well, I would say more than anyone — and tried to rehabilitate his image after he was convicted of solicitation of a minor,” Comer stated.

Rep. Robert Garcia, D-Calif., also expressed doubts about Ruemmler’s testimony, questioning the truthfulness of her responses during the hearing.

“I think it is difficult to see how she’s being completely truthful in there with the answer that she’s giving the committee,” Garcia asserted.

The House Oversight Committee continues its investigation into Epstein’s network, extending into the second year, with members seeking clarity and accountability in the matter.
