Senate Judiciary Committee Grills Acting AG Todd Blanche

Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche is under intense scrutiny from the Senate Judiciary Committee. Senators are challenging Blanche regarding the Justice Department’s independence from the White House, the handling of the Jeffrey Epstein investigation, and issues related to election fraud complaints.

Former Deputy Assistant Attorney General John Yoo provides insights into the heated session. He emphasizes the historical context of attorney general appointments and the ongoing debate over executive power.

Blanche’s confirmation process continues, facing a second day of questioning by the Senate. Two key Republicans, Senators Thom Tillis from North Carolina and John Cornyn from Texas, hold the power to influence his confirmation. Neither has confirmed their support for him yet.

The first day of the hearing was marked by inquiries into the Department of Justice’s management of millions of documents related to Jeffrey Epstein, known as the Epstein Files. Questions also arose about the anti-weaponization fund and if the DOJ would serve as a tool for President Donald Trump.

The anti-weaponization fund, amounting to $1.8 billion, was established to compensate individuals who claimed they were victims of government weaponization. Senator Cornyn raised concerns over this fund, with Blanche stating it was enforceable but not actively moving forward. Cornyn remains undecided about his vote.

During the hearing, Blanche faced criticism for being Trump’s former personal defense lawyer. When directly asked by Senator John Kennedy, Blanche clarified his role, stating, “I’m his lawyer — was his lawyer, and now I’m the deputy attorney general.”

Senator Tillis shares similar concerns regarding the anti-weaponization fund. When asked if he would support legislation to end the fund permanently, Blanche agreed, indicating possible approval from the administration to terminate it.

The hearing also sees opposition from Senate Democrats. Senator Dick Durbin criticized Blanche for his association with Trump, calling the former president a pathological liar. Durbin argued that representing Trump undermines Blanche’s integrity and suitability for attorney general.

Senator Chris Coons acknowledged Blanche’s qualifications as a prosecutor. However, Coons argued that Blanche should not support or tolerate the DOJ’s weaponization to serve a retribution agenda for Trump, instead of pursuing justice based on facts and law.
