Wildfire smoke has swept across the Midwest and Northeast, leading to deteriorated air quality and hazy skies. Health experts suggest staying indoors or wearing masks outside due to potential hazards. Keep windows and doors closed both at home and in vehicles to limit smoke infiltration.
Running air conditioning can help maintain clean air. In cars, activate the air recirculation button to use interior air instead of drawing in outside smoke. This also helps improve cooling efficiency and gas mileage. At home, ensure the air conditioning mode recirculates internal air. Avoid using fresh air intake features, as Dr. Brian Christman from Vanderbilt University advises against this during smoky conditions. Filters rated MERV 13 or higher are recommended.
Covering door cracks with blankets or towels can further reduce smoke entry. Using an air purifier, even a small room-sized one, can enhance air quality in your activity spaces, suggests Jennifer Stowell, a research scientist at Boston University’s Center for Climate and Health.
According to Nexstar meteorologist Darrius Stringer, improvements in air quality might occur over the weekend due to expected storms and rain. Cleaner air conditions are anticipated by Sunday.
