Vice President JD Vance recently shared his views on the decline of California during a conversation with podcaster Joe Rogan. Vance compared the current condition of California, especially under Governor Gavin Newsom, with experiences he had in a ‘Third World country.’

Vance recounted a striking experience of driving through a struggling neighborhood in Los Angeles on his way to a lavish Christmas party. He drew parallels between the stark contrast he observed and the situation at the U.S. Embassy in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. He noted the disparity between the wealth and security inside and the visible poverty outside.

Vice President Vance expressed his concern over California’s condition, mentioning his personal connection to the state through his wife, Usha, who hails from southern California. He shared his heartbreak over seeing Los Angeles deteriorate, describing the city as quintessentially American with notable architecture and a unique vibe, yet overshadowed by issues like skid row.

Rogan, who has publicly discussed his reasons for leaving California, spoke of individuals facing difficulties selling their homes. He criticized Governor Newsom, claiming that residents are being misled regarding the state’s economic status, referring to California’s GDP comparison to the world’s largest economies.

Vance humorously suggested assessing a state’s economic performance by considering U-Haul rental costs for entering versus leaving the state.

Rogan fondly remembered his time spent in California, enjoying the state’s weather and activities, yet lamented the political factors that he believes contributed to its decline.

The issue of skid row, known for its homeless encampments and crime, was highlighted by Rogan as an area experiencing growth, expanding by five blocks.
